Most food carts in Portland, Oregon offer a small variety of good eats. Nong’s offers one: chicken and rice. Yes, you can get dark meat and skin if you want, but it is still chicken and rice.
What makes it so good? Simplicity and perfection. Each step of the process from the spicy sauce to the way it is wrapped in butcher paper has to be done right or it veers from it’s perfect path.
Nong also breaks the stereotype of the non-smiling, all business Asian store owner. I don’t know how she does it, but each person is greeted with her infectious smile as if you are her favorite customer. I think people go back for that smile as much as the food.
